Scotland's geosites are chosen because of their local, national or international importance. Take only photos, leave only footprints: avoid causing any damage to this site. You can walk almost anywhere in Scotland without the need to ask permission or keep to paths, but you have a responsibility to care for your own safety, to respect people's privacy and peace of mind and to cause no damage.
The right of access does not extend to quarries, building sites or any land where public access is prohibited, or to the collection of geological samples.
This site has yielded an exceptional fossil flora of Asbian (Lower Carboniferous) age, in which details of cell structure of the plants has been finely preserved. The assemblage has a number of points in common with the nearby Pettycur flora, which is of about the same age. It differs, however, in having a much more diverse range of pteridosperms, many of which are believed to be new to science, in contrast to the equisete/lycophyte/fern dominated assemblage of Pettycur. Oxroadia is the only lycophyte reported from Kingswood, but is of interest since it is by far the youngest known occurrence of the genus. The site is of international significance and has outstanding research potential.
